Why should a business join?
Joining 1% for Humanity provides businesses with a unique opportunity to help people in need and express philanthropic values to consumers. Member businesses become part of a network of like-minded companies seeking to inspire change and raise awareness about the importance of committed giving. Use of the 1% for Humanity Member logo consistently communicates this commitment. 1% for Humanity also lists member businesses on its own website, where consumers can research participants and link directly to their homepages. Additionally, we act as a third-party certifier of Member donations, providing accountability for giving commitments through an annual reporting and verification process.
Why 1% of revenues?
Placing an actual figure on the giving commitment provides a clear and tangible message to consumers. Making the commitment based on gross revenue figures as opposed to profits ensures that donations will be given regardless of company performance.
Does money go through 1% for Humanity?
Member businesses give their donations DIRECTLY to the qualified nonprofit(s) of their choosing. They develop their own relationship and giving programs with the nonprofit(s) and report annually to 1% for Humanity for certification of their commitment. 1% for Humanity charges participating businesses a minimal annual membership fee that helps cover our own program and administrative costs. This fee varies on a sliding scale based on the revenue of the participating business and may be applied towards the 1% donation commitment.
How are donations reported to 1% for Humanity?
After each fiscal year, your company provides us with written certification of its donations. This submission may consist of tax returns, receipts, and/or a CPA report. Complete details of reporting options, timelines and other requirements are included in the membership agreement.
What if my company already gives to a humanitarian nonprofit?
We want to help promote your giving so consumers recognize it and others are inspired to act similarly. Your current giving can already count towards the 1% for Humanity commitment as long as it's to a qualified organization that we can include in our approved nonprofits list.
What if my company wishes to support a nonprofit that is not currently listed on your website?
If a qualified nonprofit you wish to support is not currently on our approved nonprofits list, we can add them at your request. This allows you to support your cause of choice and also provides a promotional benefit to the nonprofit you wish to support. How much would my company's annual membership fee cost?
The annual fee is quite modest and varies by the size of your company's revenue. Please contact us for specific figures.
Can my 1% giving commitment consist of Gifts-in-Kind donations?
Yes. Up to 25% of your annual 1% commitment can be in the form of Gifts-in-Kind donations (donation of goods or services), provided these donations have proper supporting documentation.
How is 1% for Humanity supported financially?
The annual fees we charge to participating businesses cover a portion of our costs. As a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization we also rely on donations and grants to support our efforts.
How do I join?
Contact us and we will provide a sample membership agreement for your review. You'll then provide us with basic information regarding your business and we'll put together a customized agreement for you. As soon as we receive your signed agreement and first year's membership dues, we'll send you the member logo and add you to our members list.
